Petition Says He Misbehaved With Students

Chennai: A teacher from Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School,Egmore,will remain suspended until the completion of an inquiry against him,the Madras high court has ordered.
Complaints were raised by parents alleging that the teacher,Tharmen Fernandez,misbehaved with students.Charges of sexual harassment were also levelled against him by women staff members.Passing orders on Thursday on a writ petition filed by Srinivas Rajan,a parent,Justice K Chandru directed school authorities to appoint a retired judicial officer,not below the rank of district judge,to conduct an inquiry into the allegations against Fernandez by students,parents and the parentteachers association within a period of three months.School authorities were also directed to constitute a special committee,as directed by the Supreme Court in the 1997 Vishaka case,to inquire into complaints by women staff of sexual harassment.
This report should be obtained within three months.Further action against the teacher would be taken based on this report,the order said.
The petition said the teacher behaved badly with students,used abusive language in the classes,and made derogatory remarks about all religions. Srinivas Rajan said he had filed a complaint with the school authorities on December 1,2010.
